Min Aung Hlaing Became President
Coup leader Min Aung Hlaing was elected as President of Myanmar by the military-controlled parliament, marking a further consolidation of military rule five years after the 2021 coup. Min Aung Hlaing’s presidency comes amid ongoing international scrutiny and allegations of serious human rights violations, including those linked to the Rohingya crisis and the post-2021 civil war. He is currently subject to multiple international legal actions and complaints, including an Argentina universal jurisdiction criminal case where arrest warrants have been issued, an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant request under review, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) genocide case concerning Myanmar as a state, and a 2026 criminal complaint filed in Indonesia.
