Over 5,000 people trapped in Myanmar scam centres near Thai border, rights group says
More than 5,300 people remain trapped in online scam compounds near the Myanmar–Thailand border, according to the Civil Society Network for Human Trafficking Victim Assistance (CSNHTV). The victims, many of them foreign nationals from China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brazil, Russia, and several African countries, are reportedly being held in four compounds controlled by the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA). The rights group has urged Thai authorities to take action, warning that despite previous regional crackdowns that freed thousands of victims, large-scale scam and human trafficking operations continue to operate in the area.
