The parts of Myanmar the military junta doesn’t want you to see
Myanmar’s military junta is holding its first elections since the 2021 coup, but independent reporting from inside the country shows the process is dominated by fear, intimidation and heavy security, with low voter turnout and people reluctant to speak freely. Journalists covering voting were closely watched, and many locals said they feared repercussions if they refused to participate. The military is using the election to try to improve its image internationally, even as civil war and widespread repression continue and major opposition figures and parties remain excluded.
